RELCO Pacific offers a design and installation service for a wide range of food products in conjunction with our process partners Ingetecsa and Andritz Gouda.

Our processes include drying, sterilization/pasteurization (thermal treatment), cooling and mixing.

Pilot plants are available for in-situ testing or in our (partners) own laboratories so we are able to perfect any process prior to embarking on a full commercial project.

Spiral Flash Dryer

Image Spiral Flash Dryer modelThe Spiral Flash Dryer is a unique dryer, marketed in cooperation with our partner Ingetecsa.

It provides a novel method of processing particles of any shape in a gas (normally hot air) combining the advantages of a fluid bed with those of a flash dryer.
And, there are no moving parts inside the reactor, which results in high performance and availability capabilities and low maintenance costs.

The Spiral Flash Dryer consists of a cylindrical reactor chamber where a rotating and high-speed flow of process gas entrains the raw material, carrying it in suspension on a ‘bed’. This extremely turbulent environment creates a very intense contact between the hot process gas and the feed material, yielding a highly efficient and quick heat-to-mass transfer. The Spiral Flash Dryer is driven completely by the displacement of process gas.




In the dryer, the layer of moving particles to be processed is held in suspension by jets of the process gas. These jets are created by passing the process gas stream through the slots between stationary angled "blades" (similar to closely spaced stationery turbine blades) so that the high velocity energy generated as the process gas passes through these slots is dissipated on the base of a shallow bed of particles. Where the base of this bed is impacted by the high velocity jets, a highly turbulent area is created imparting both vertical lift and horizontal motion to the bed. The annular shape of the Spiral Flash Dryer creates a compact gently rotating bed of material which describes a toroidal circulation pattern above the blades.


Flash dryer

Flash DryerFlash drying is a technology used to dry, cool or roast powders, filter cakes and sludgy materials.

Ingetecsa's flash dryers and flash cooler stand out for their excellent product treatment, low energy consumption and minimal operation and maintenance intervenience. They are purpose built to each process and for different product properties. In addition, Ingetecsa has engineered distinguishing constructive components, such as a centrifuge feeder, as well as a particularly refined aerodynamic design. This arrangement ensures an outstanding dispersion of the product with relatively low pressure drops, minimizing energy consumption. Heat and mass transfer between solids and hot gases is extremely rapid.


A good design flash dryer consists of a few critical elements that make the difference, to list a few:

Centrifugal feeder
This centrifugal feeder - or so-called sling - evenly feeds product into the hot air flow. The better this is dispersed, the better and more homogenuous the end product gets.

The design has proven to be very successful and customers' feedback show that significant less cleaning and maintenance is required than other centrifugal feeders available.


Ingetecsa's very high efficiency cyclones belong to the best available in the market and make the need for 2nd stage separation technology such as police filters obsolete. This makes design simpler, reduces pressure losses and operational expenditures.

The design of the flash dryer or flash cooler is crucial to obtain an efficient heat transfer, an hygienic design that minimes product build up and intervals for maintenance and to make to highest product quality in terms of product functionality and uniform dryness.



The main advantage of this parallel flow equipment is the extremely short residence time, ensuring particularly careful thermal treatment of the product. The product is only initially in contact with the very hot gases and the product’s temperature will not rise as long as there is surface moisture to be evaporated. The hot gas or airstream, while also serving as the conveying means,  loses  temperature  during  the  whole  drying  process.  This  feature makes Flash Dryers especially suited for heat-sensitive products. In addition, as the amount of product being handled in the apparatus at any moment is very small, it can quickly adapt to variations in moisture or feed. The vertical design accounts for a smaller footprint.

Modified starch drying

Drying of modified starch on a single drum dryerWe are able to offer many years of expertise in drying of modified starch.

Modified starch can be manufactured either using a slurry base or reconstituted from a powder form. In this process the native starch when it is not available as a slurry form is recombined together with water until the necessary solid content has been achieved. The native starch slurry is then modified. The choice of the modification process depends on the raw material and application for the finished product. The exact process can be determined by our experts in our test facility.

Modified starch is normally dried on a high efficiency single drum drier. The robust design ensures a uniform drying and scraping process that ensures consistent product quality. For many years.




Baby food

Baby food processed on the drum dryer: a unique set of properties.For more than a century, instant cereal based baby food has been manufactured on process lines incorporating the drum drying technology. Due to the organoleptic properties obtained from this type of process these drum dried products are easy to prepare and therefore have become the standard for cereal based baby food.

The drum drying technology guarantees that the product will be fully gelatinized, so that it can be broken down and digested in the human body. The gelatinization also makes the product easily (cold) soluble during reconstitution, resulting in a smooth and light viscous porridge.

The very high protein solubility, good swelling behaviour, and water absorption of the final product is a unique combination of product characteristics obtained by the drum drying process, something that can not be achieved with other processes.

To date, Andritz Gouda has supplied the majority of the world's drum dried baby food processing lines.
